Introduction

The intended audience of this document are implementors of Z39.50 services in Norway and their partners and system suppliers.

Further information about the NorZIG activities is available from the official NorZIG Web-site: http://www.norzig.no/

The NorZIG Holdings Profile version 2 supercedes the previous version:

Scope

The primary objective of the NorZIG Holdings Profile is to facilitate interoparability between library systems in Norway, while being conformant to international profiles.

The profile describes a simple method for embedding summary location and holdings data into NORMARC, MARC 21 and SUTRS records. This method is required by the NorZIG Z39.50 Profile version 2, for the purpose of exchanging holdings data by the Z39.50 present service. [2].

Furthermore, the methods described in this profile are recommended for Norwegian systems exchanging holdings data without the use of the Z39.50 protocol.

This profile makes no assumptions about the completeness of bibliographic records. The examples are all showing records with both bibliographic and holdings data elements - as required when using Element Set Name = "F". (See [2]).

In the case of MARC records with Element Set Name = "B1", the records are expected to include holdings data elements only. (See [2]).

Periodicals

NORMARC:

The target must include one or several 850 fields, containing the following subfields, where the Norwegian descriptions are quoted from the NORMARC standard:

Subfield Description Description (Norwegian)
$aInstitution/location Eiende bibliotek/avdeling
$bSublocation/collection Filial- avdelings- eller samlingskode
$cShelving location Hyllesignatur
$gHoldings string (Not in NORMARC)
$iFirst volume Første bind i biblioteket
$jParallel numbering for first volume Parallell bindnummerering til første bind
$kFirst year Første år i biblioteket
$lLast volume Siste bind i biblioteket
$mParallel numbering for last volume Parallell bindnummerering til siste bind
$nLast year Siste år i biblioteket

One of the subfields ($g) is not a part of the NORMARC standard:

$g: Holdings string

This subfield applies to periodicals only. The proper way of entering holdings data is through the use of subfields $i - $n. As not many systems keep such detailed information, subfield $g can be used to include a "holdings string", which is human-readable, but most often not machine parsable. The use of subfield $g is mandatory, while subfields $i - $n are optional.

Example:

022 $a 0038-092x
245 $a Solar energy
$b the journal of solar energy science and engineering
260 $a Phoenix, Ariz. $b The Association for Applied Solar Energy
850 $a NTUB $b t $c q620.91:551.521.1(05) So4
     $g 2(1958)-6(1962)nr 2, 13(1971/72)-
850 $a NTUB - VarmeL $b t $c q620.91:551.521.1(05) So4 $g 30(1983)-
     $i 30 $k 1983
850 $a UBB - UBBRB $b Z $c Sol $g 1(1957)- $i 1 $k 1957
850 $a UMN - UMN/FYS $b Tidsskr. $c SOL $g 44(1990)- $i 44 $k 1990

MARC21:

The target must include one or several 866 fields, containing the following subfields:

Subfield Description
$aHoldings string

Comment:

There is no way of using embedded location/holdings data in the MARC 21 bibliographic record in the same way as the NORMARC proposal. However, as 866 $a is a string with no further structure, we propose to prefix the actual holdings ("caption") string with location data that would go into 850 $a in the NORMARC case.

Example:

022 $a 0038-092x
245 $a Solar energy
$b the journal of solar energy science and engineering
260 $a Phoenix, Ariz. $b The Association for Applied Solar Energy
866 $a NTUB 2(1958)-6(1962)nr 2, 13(1971/72)-
866 $a NTUB - VarmeL So4 30(1983)-
866 $a UBB - UBBRB 1(1957)-
866 $a UMN - UMN/FYS 44(1990)-

SUTRS:

The target should include one or several "records" - each consisting of one or several lines - with the same contents as in the NORMARC case for subfields $a, $b and $c, but without subfield information or other punctuation. Holdings data should be expressed in human-readable form, e.g. in the same way as in subfield $g.

Example:

Tittel: Solar energy : the journal of solar energy science and engineering
Trykt : Phoenix, Ariz., The Association for Applied Solar Energy
ISSN : 0038-092x

NTUB t q620.91:551.521.1(05) So4 2(1958)-6(1962)nr 2, 13(1971/72)-

UBB - UBBRB Z Sol 1(1957)-

Monographs

NORMARC:

The target must include one or several 850 fields, containing the following subfields, where the Norwegian descriptions are quoted from the NORMARC standard:

Subfield Description Description (Norwegian)
$aInstitution/locationEiende bibliotek/avdeling
$bSublocation/collectionFilial- avdelings- eller samlingskode
$cShelving locationHyllesignatur
$fUse restrictions(Not in NORMARC)
$hCirculation status(Not in NORMARC)
$xDate of circulation status(Not in NORMARC)
$yLoan expiry date(Not in NORMARC)

Four of the subfields are not a part of the NORMARC standard:

$f: Use restrictions

This subfield must be used to state use restrictions on the copy level.

The absence of this subfield should not be given any particular interpretation.

A list of legal values for this subfield is given in table 1, taken from the Z39.50 Holdings schema [3].

$h Circulation status

This subfield must be used to state circulation status on the copy level.

The absence of this subfield should not be given any particular interpretation.

A list of legal values for this subfield is given in table 2, taken from the Z39.50 Holdings schema [3].

$x Time of circulation status

This subfield must be used to state the time of validity of the circulation status given in subfield $h.

The absence of this subfield should not be given any particular interpretation.

In the case when the circulation status is reflecting the "now" situation - as is the case when the target accesses a real-time updated circulation system - the value of this field must be the string "NOW".

In all other cases, the value of this subfield must comply with the ISO 8601 standard, either as

Complete date: YYYY-MM-DD (eg 1997-07-16)

or as

Complete date plus hours and minutes: YYYY-MM-DDThh:mmTZD (eg 1997-07-16T19:20+01:00)

$y Loan expiry date

This subfield must be used to state the date of expiry in the case when the circulation status given in subfield $h is "on loan".

The absence of this subfield should not be given any particular interpretation.

The value of this subfield should comply with the ISO 8601 standard, given as

Complete date: YYYY-MM-DD (eg 1997-07-16)

Example:

100 $a Brünnich, Morten Thrane

MARC21:

The Target must include one or several 852 fields, containing the subfields specified in MARC 21.

Additionaly, holdings data must be duplicated in the 859 field, which should contain the same subfields as the NORMARC 850 field, specified above.

Example:

100 $a Brünnich, Morten Thrane
240 $a Ornithologia borealis
245 $a M. Th. Brünnichii Ornithologia borealis sistens collectionem
     avium
